We are excited to announce the Early Childhood Program at Bishop Kelley Catholic School is expanding. Starting in the 2019-2020 school year, we will be offering a full-day Junior Kindergarten program, taught by Mrs. Jackie Schumacher. This program is designed for 4 and 5-year -old students that are not ready for the demands of a Kindergarten classroom. Our Junior Kindergarten Program focuses on the social ,emotional and academic development needed for these students to succeed in a traditional Kindergarten classroom. Junior Kindergarten students follow a daily schedule similar to that of a traditional Kindergarten/Preschool classroom. Our hands-on curriculum allows students to master skills at a developmentally appropriate pace. We are excited for this new program to serve as a stepping stone to a successful Kindergarten transition.

Social DevelopmentSocial development is a young child’s growing capacity to form close personal relationships with other people, especially parents and caregivers.
These skills include: enjoying interactions with others, making and keeping friends, appropriately being curious about the people and things around him or her, and liking to discover new things. |
Emotional DevelopmentEmotional development helps children express and manage emotions; and to explore new environments. They learn to
express a wide variety of emotions: excitement, sharing and even calming down when upset. Research has shown a strong link between social/emotional skills and school success. It has been a great predictor of a child's academic performance in the first grade more than their familial background and their cognitive abilities. Emotional development is needed for children to learn when they are struggling to follow directions, get along with their peers and control their emotions in a classroom setting. |
Academic DevelopmentJunior Kindergarten students follow a daily schedule similar to that of a traditional Kindergarten/Preschool classroom. Our hands-on curriculum allows students to master skills at a developmentally appropriate pace. Such skills include:
following multi-step instructions, finding multiple ways to solve problems, and organizing their work. |
